April 13, 2010 The Mivvi Issue
Gabriel Jaguaribe Giucci became known as Mivvi after appearing on the TV add for an ice cream branded as ‘Mivvi’. However, his real fame has not come from acting. From an early age Mivvi showed signs of his talent; I recall during our early school days when we had to do a logo for a paper recycling campaign. All the kids had to participate and then vote on the best one. We were probably 10 years old. Mivvi won. After that his career took off.
He would spend whole classes drawing the funniest and most detailed little creatures, but teachers couldn’t punish him; they were all just amazed by Mr. Jaguaribe’s world.
Mivvi gets really excited about things; he talks fast, jumps around and does a lot of hand movements, but when it comes to drawing and painting he just tunes out, and goes into a quiet, peaceful, almost meditational trance. The result; impressive.
Always seeking perfection, his style has evolved. The detailed micro world he started with has expanded. Drawings became paintings, paintings turned into collages, but never resting at one style, subject matter or medium.
Mivvi’s works speak for themselves, not needing concepts or words to back it up. He is already gaining a lot of recognition in Brazil, and I believe his future is very promising. For more of Mivvi’s artworks check out his Flickr.

April 12, 2010 The Influential People Issue
I love this collage made by Vogue RG, it cracks me up. It is illustrating an article about the Time’s ‘top 100 most influential people in the world’ poll. Lady Gaga is leading the rank with 359289 votes whereas our president Lula is in the 45th place with only 6269 votes. Another Brazilian on the run to become one of the 100 most influential people in the world is the soccer player Kaka… I honestly don’t know what are the criteria for being influential since Taylor Swift has more votes than Steve Jobs… but anyway, if you wanna vote just click here.

March 26, 2010 The World Cup Issue
I’m not a soccer fanatic at all, but there is just nothing better than spending the world cup in Brazil. Kids get to go home earlier from school to watch the games, big screens are installed in every single bar, friends get together to watch Brazil play, and even Sao Paulo Fashion Week’s dates have been delayed this year due to the games. More importantly, during the soccer world cup people realize that no matter what their social differences may be, in the end, we are all Brazilians, and a great feeling of hope is spread. The vibrancy and the energy that goes on all around our soccer fanatic country during this time is just amazing. It helps knowing that we have a great team (i think) and that Brazil is the country that has won the world cup more times. We may be a corrupted and disorganized place, but there are two things we can make really well: models and soccer players. South Africa is holding the world cup this year, it will start in June, so if you’re after some good times come spend it here!

March 24, 2010 The RE:board Issue
Brazilian Art goes to L.A. – by skateboard
From March 27th to April 9th, Tony Alva’s Exhibit A Gallery will be showing RE:board, an art show with over 50 decks, that tell the history of skateboarding in Brazil, featuring the homonimous documentary, directed, shot and produced by Alexandre Sesper, who’s a skateboarder, graphic artist and lead singer of a hardcore band called Garage Fuzz, since 1991. He personally shot, directed and produced the documentary, collected the decks and interviewed everyone involved.
He collected several testimonies, from skateboarders, manufacturers and artists, who were pioneers in the 80′s and are, nowadays, praised designers.
Among the models that will be shown, are the first three Brazilian deck models, that demarcated the start of the sport’s professionalization in the country, in 1985: Álvaro Por Quê?, George Rotatori and Jorge Kuge’s models, manufactured by Urgh and drawn by Billy Argel. The artist also signs the best sold professional deck in Brazil: Thronn’s model, a national street champion that lives in California nowadays.
At the opening party, you will meet the documentary author, Alexandre Sesper; the art show curator, Ana Paula Negrão, Jorge Kuge, Urgh owner and several other relevant names.
RE:board – “Brazilian skateboard decks art show”
From March 27th to April 9th, 11 AM to 7 PM
Exhibit A Gallery – 1086 South Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90019

March 22, 2010 The Art of Capeto Issue

Photos from Isabela Capeto’s winter 2010 collection named ‘Filtros’.
Isabela Capeto is one of the most successful Brazilian fashion designers; she graduated at the Academia di Moda in Florence, and after getting acquainted with the Italian tailoring and its elegant yet fun style, she has been working for some of the best brands in Brazil, including Maria Bonita, Maria Bonita Extra, and Lenny. In 2003 Capeto opened her own atelier in the charming neighborhood of Gavea, Rio de Janeiro, and she now owns two ‘Isabela Capeto’ boutiques, one in Rio and one in Sao Paulo. Known for creating clothes inspired by museums and books, she has now combined both her passions and opened an art space at the front yard of her Sao Paulo shop. Felipe Dmab is the curator of the space and launched it with artworks of the Brazilian artists Gabriel Lima and Renato Breder, who worked in collaboration with the designers Louis DeCicco and Marico Ouchi, owners of the super trendy New York jewelry brand FAUX/real.

March 19, 2010 The Alessandra Ambrosio Issue
Brazilian top model and Victoria’s Secret’s angel, Alessandra Ambrosio is the cover of this month’s French Elle magazine…

I love this last shot. I think that’s exactly what me and my friends wanted to look like when we all bought long boards at the age of 15.

March 19, 2010 The Santa Teresa Issue
I WANNA LIVE HERE:
Unfortunately for me, and fortunately for those loaded foreign people, this is a hotel, a very beautiful, peaceful and cool one: the Santa Teresa Hotel. Located in Santa Teresa, the most charming neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, the STH is considered one of the most beautiful ones in South America! This boutique hotel used to be a coffee plantation mansion, which influenced the theme of the decoration. Not only the place is amazing, but it also seems like their restaurant is fabulous, serving French food with a Brazilian flair… I can’t wait to watch the sunset by that pool with a glass of sav in my hands.

March 16, 2010 The ‘Eu Amo’ Issue
Just as I thought “why the hell don’t they have descent vintage shops in Rio?” my bestie Bu introduced me to this shop. Eu Amo’s website may be cool, but their shop is even cooler; located in the arty neighborhood of Santa Tereza, Eu Amo (which means ‘I Love’ in portuguese) is a true scape from the epidemy of claustrophobic malls full of snobbish people selling exactly the same thing in different versions. Therefore, if you are sick of paying insane amounts of money for all that China crap with different tags on it, or if you can’t stand malls like me, or if you just wanna stroll around Santa Tereza and catch a tram overlooking the Sugar Loaf, make sure you pop in there.

March 15, 2010 The Investment Issue
I don’t know why but I have suddenly developed an interest for investments and stock markets. I must say I know nothing about it, all I know is that things are looking promising for our country. As the BRIC GROUP website says, “Brazil is not just a pretty face, but an up and coming super power where opportunity abounds”. I hope they are right…
Brazil has so much money that it is hard to believe there is still people struggling to survive. Politicians are still corrupt, the government is still a mess, and taxes are still as high as the sky and paid only by a small percentage of the population, but I must say, we have come a long way. Hopefully one day, in a not so far away future, it will take only 5 days to open a business (instead of 30), and the public services will work properly.

March 15, 2010 The Carpi Issue
Mario Testino and Terry Richardson are not the only photographers who have a thing for Brazil; the Italian Claudio Carpi was added to this list with a photo shoot for Vanity Fair last year.
Famous for his celebs’ portraits, Carpi is exhibiting at the MAM (museum of modern art) of Rio de Janeiro starting this tuesday (16th of March). The exhibition will include the portraits of 32 celebrities like Dita VonTeese, Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, and also Brazilians like Ronaldo, Fernanda Lima and Oscar Niemeyer.

March 4, 2010 The Gossip Issue
If you haven’t been out dancing in a while and you do enjoy some indie/punk/rock sound, here’s your opportunity. The band Gossip is coming to Brazil, playing in Porto Alegre on the 13th of March, Belo Horizonte on the 17th, Sao Paulo on the 19th and finally in Rio on the 20th. Check out their myspace!
Some people may think they sound just like any other indie/rock band, but what I like about Gossip is Beth Ditto’s attitude; she’s not afraid to say what she thinks or to wear what she wants. As some would say, “Punk Will Never Diet”. Ditto created her own clothing line for Evans, where overweighted gals can finally buy some more glam and sexy outfits.
Here’s Ditto showing some attitude posing naked for the first issue of Love magazine. Go girl!

February 28, 2010 The Progetti Issue
What’s up with Italians and good taste? Not to mention their cultural awareness, sense of style and charming mannerism, ‘ma que?!’.
Yesterday I went to Paola Colacurcio and Niccolo Sprovieri’s gallery, Progetti, in Rio’s downtown, and after chatting to Paola, this lovely Italian art connoisseur for about two hours, I left her gallery inspired and confident in the future of art in Brazil.
Paola was friendly, generous (I got out of there with Jannis Kounellis art book, and Chelpa Ferro’s DVD), and she showed me that it is possible to have a commercial art gallery with profound and exciting works of art.
Progetti is the only international (but also national) art gallery in Rio, although the artworks are not imported; she invites international artists to come over and produce their works here, influenced by the boiling Brazilian culture. In fact it does sound more fascinating to bring artists over and let them produce their work inspired by our beautiful chaos, although I learnt that bringing artworks to Brazil just isn’t a possibility for many; the importing taxes can go up to 40 percent on top of the work’s price, uninviting the cultural exchange.
Paola mentioned the difficulties of dealing with culture in a country where education is still limited, but she sees it as a challenge, and the outcome as priceless. Brazil has many people who wants to learn and have a greater cultural involvement, but the opportunities are narrowed. Before Progetti’s first exhibition, who launched their space in 2008 with the works of Jannis Kounellis, the artist held a talk at Parque Lage where over 500 people showed up. Kounellis is a renowned Italian artist who’s works coined the term ‘Arte Povera’ (Poor Art). His talk was so inspirational that people came up to Paola to thank her for the opportunity and the initiative.
Paola has also exposed to me the fact that we must invite international art if we want our art to be invited over. Times are constantly changing and globalization already seems like a last century term, therefore we must take full advantage of technology and allow the cultural barriers to be broken, not only virtually.
Check out Progetti’s website to see more info, exhibitions and so on.
